Assessment Service Second Person Present Policy

A second person will be in attendance during assessments undertaken in a student's home, in university or other living accommodation. The second person will have no official role other than to accompany the assessor.

Policy purpose

This policy will ensure there should never be an occasion when assessor and student are alone together in an isolated assessment venue, affording a measure of security for both.

Second Person - Code of Conduct:

The second person

  1. Will not take any part in the assessment process, explicitly:
  2. Will not take part in the assessment discussion between assessor and student.
  3. Will not make comments during the assessment.
  4. Will conduct him/herself appropriately.
  5. May not assist in equipment set up or the demonstration of equipment without the prior agreement of the Centre Manager.
  6. Is not required to undertake any other tasks related to the assessment process.
  7. Will carry out reasonable requests made by the assessor that do not contravene 1 to 4 above.
  8. Is not permitted to undertake activities that are the responsibility of the student e.g. Childcare.

Administrative procedure

  1. The Access SUMMIT Assessment Service Team will arrange assessment appointment bookings with the second person and by agreement with the assessor, arrange a pickup time and mutually convenient pickup point either at the Centre or en route to the assessment venue. If necessary the second person will provide directions to the pickup point.
  2. The second person will notify the Centre as early as possible at any time after the booking if they are unable to attend and as soon as possible after 9.00 am should this be on the morning of the assessment.
  3. The second person will complete and submit a timesheet to Access SUMMIT within one week of the assessment date.
