A brief guide to support for students with a medical condition / unseen disability...

Examples include: diabetes, epilepsy, asthma, ME (myalgic encephalomyelitis), cancer, Crohn's Disease, haemophilia and cystic fibrosis.

Many students with a medical condition are able to undertake their studies with no additional support. However, there are students with some conditions who need some reasonable adjustments and additional support / resources to enable them to complete their studies effectively.

Some of these conditions are stable, and a student's additional support requirements will remain the same throughout their course. In cases where a condition is degenerative or intermittent, a student may need to vary their support, or take time off from study, particularly as fatigue is often associated with chronic medical conditions. Flexible timetabling and deadlines may be needed to allow for periods when the student is too ill to work and the student may prefer to study at home as much as possible.

Specific conditions may have their own requirements, for example, diabetic students may need a refrigerator in their accommodation for the storage of insulin and some students may need a place of privacy to take medication.
