Typical difficulties at University might include:-
- Accessing taught classes and lectures
- Taking notes
- Communicating with staff and fellow students
- Producing written work in English
- Studying in university libraries / study areas
- Accessing social and extra curricular events
Appropriate Reasonable Adjustments might include:-
- Deaf Awareness Training for academic and
support staff
- Provision of a loop system in lecture theatres
- Vibrating / visual fire alarms
- Modified language examination papers
Support/resources available via Access SUMMIT
might include:-
- Assessment of Needs undertaken by assessor
experienced in issues affecting deaf / hard of hearing students;
- Support package including:-
- Provision of an Interpreter or Lipspeaker in
a variety of settings;
- Provision of a note taker in taught classes;
- Personal Communication Technology eg. FM
System / Radio Aid;
- Digital recording device for use in lectures
or taught classes;
- Language Support Tuition;
- Personal Computer with assistive and course
related software;
- Training to make sure you make best use of
the equipment you have;
- Ongoing Assistive Technology Support to make
sure your equipment continues to give you the support you need throughout
your course.
