Study Skills Tuition / Mentoring - realise your potential by improving your study skills and academic coping skills...

We can supply Support Tutors and Support Mentors to students studying in the Greater Manchester/North West area. Our Support Tutors / Mentors have experience of working with students in Higher Education with a range of learning needs arising from a disability including dyslexia, dyscalculia and mental health difficulties.

A.   Where From?

  1. Support Tutors / Mentors are registered with and trained by Access SUMMIT

  2. Access SUMMIT will: match a Tutor / Mentor to your needs, resolve any mismatching, expect feedback from you (and your Tutor / Mentor), monitor the quality of support and expect you to maintain a considerate working relationship

B.   What Do Tutors / Mentors Do?

They can help with Time Management

  1. Balancing study / relaxation

  2. Balancing family / paid work / study

  3. Planning work & prioritising assignments

  4. Realistic revision strategies

They can provide Emotional Support

  1. Encouraging

  2. Building up confidence

  3. Acting as a sounding board

They can help you develop Effective Study Skills

  1. Note taking in lectures, from recorded lectures, books and journals;

  2. Planning / structuring coursework;

  3. Writing styles for different purposes;

  4. Researching and using the library and Internet;

  5. Referencing and citations;

  6. Proofreading;

  7. Presentations, use of self, reactions to group;

  8. Memory and recall;

  9. Revision techniques and examination skills.

C.   Working Relationship

How Supportive is Your Tutor/Mentor?

  1. Tutors/Mentors specialise in knowing about different and diverse ways of learning.

  2. Tutors/Mentors can help you with assignments.

  3. Tutors/Mentors are experienced people who have worked alongside adults with a wide range of difficulties.

How Often Do You Meet?

  1. Hours are allocated for the whole academic year

  2. Regular use - weekly, fortnightly, monthly

  3. "As and when" use - agreed between tutor/mentor and yourself

  4. Vacation support needs by special arrangement

Where Do You Meet?

  1. Study rooms in your department / library

  2. At Access Summit

  3. At home - only by special arrangement

D.   Administration

How Are Records Kept?

  1. Timesheet signed by tutor/mentor and yourself

  2. Tutor's/Mentor's working log of support given

Who Pays?

  1. Your Funding Body from the Disabled Student Allowance

  2. Invoiced monthly by Access Summit from timesheet

How Long Does Support Last?

  1. Short-term - to build up skills

  2. Long-term - as demands of course increase

  3. Intensive - as the need arises, e.g. dissertation preparation
